A very costly diet that I followed - following - will follow!!!
Caution : I will tell you in the last paragraph why this is costly diet!
Thanks much for all your wishes and regards for the post I shared. Few had asked about my experience and important changes becos of this diet. So thought I will write about it. Before jumping into my secret behind the output, let me start with the input - my lifestyle.
I work for an IT company, as you all expect I was in Night shift [5.30pm to 3am] for more than 10 years till last year. Had a c-section 5 yrs back. After 4 months of maternity leave, I again started working in the same shift. So here is my daily activities.
Evening 5.30 to 3am - work [dinner at 9pm, 11.30pm some snacks preferably fruits, 2am - Noodles or some solid food - I remember having Pongal, vada, Dosa and 4am]
4.30 am - Feed the kid, Hit the bed.
7am - Wake up along with the kid
9am - breakfast
10.30am - Hit the bed
1pm - Lunch
2-3pm - one hour sleep or sometimes no sleep.
3-5.30 - with Kid.
Do you see any pattern in my life style? Yes it sucked. But i liked it becos I could spend time with the kid. This wasnt enough. Post delivery my weight was 75kgs in 2012. With some yoga and proper food during the maternity period, I came to 69. Yes that was the first time I had seen myself in likes of 60s.
Immediately after that becos of the life changes and new mother tag, I was happily eating and putting on weight. Never realized though at times i checked my weight but that didnt bother me. My reasoning now was at the age of 30+ women will tend to put on weight and I'm completely fine with that.
I'm an active person basically, like to travel, meet people etc. So my weight wasnt a concern. Dresses have to be altered every now and then. again that was fine. But meetings were coming down becos i didnt feel like meeting any one.
Suddenly I saw some posts in FB about something called Paleo. And started seeing some strange videos. There was a person who kept posting some beef cooking videos, food that I would never taste. I was thinking, who is this guy, how did i start following him, why is he posting such vidoes, doesnt have any other job except cooking and eating??? So many questions.
I was following that page in silence for a long time thinking this is not for me. Some aliens in the world will follow this. We will keep watching it.
Then came Mr. Cable Sankar, started sharing some paleo restaurants and the food he had. I know Sankar as a foodie, becos whenever I go to a new place I would call him and ask him for good restaurant in that area. And he would help me immediately without any hesitation. So When I saw him posting about that I thought i’ts again a new food which is available in few restaurants.
Then cable Ji started posting his pics. He was losing weight and smiling. How this both can happen at the same time - My question was - Is he not feeling well? something is not right! I was concerned for Cable Ji’s health.
I changed my job from night shift to afternoon shift - 12.30pm to 9.30pm thinking this will help me to reduce weight without any diet and exercise. Again changed the job to regular shift - 10am to 6.30pm - Assumption was if I sleep properly, I will lose weight. Has the family hereditary of Diabatic and BP. Had gestational Diabatic during pregnancy. Whenever i go for sugar check, I'm always afraid that i will have diabatic.
Then came my family trip to Ooty in March 2016. I was looking at the pics taken during that trip with my brother. There was a stranger lady standing next to my brother. Though she had some resemblance of me but she was double the size of mine. But then, I was staring at the pic with disguise. I could never believe that it was me! My husband always insisted to be in shape.[Ushhhhhh I hated him for saying that] Though I never liked to see myself in a mirror. With unshape and c-section body, I was getting into depression at one point.
I couldnt wear whatever the dress I want. From XL, unknowingly I came to XXL and moving towards XXXL. Everything happened 'without my knowledge'. How could my body gain weight? What was the reason behind that? Are there some black magic???? You remember Tenali movie- whenever Kamal gives a spl expression with his lips, there comes a 'spl' sound given by somebody else similarly whenever I start eating, someone adds extra weight to those and put into my mouth. Need to find that someone immediately.
I had to undergo self analysis immediately. From school days, I have this habit of doing night study and can never get up even at 6.30am - for me it is still midnight. My night shift life added fuel to it. I had never seen sun rise. Either he has to come really late at 9am or I can only see him in the evening. If at all I get up at 6am in the morning for any reason, then I have to hit the bed at 9am again.
So when I thought of a diet and exercise plan, nothing was working out becos of this habit. And I'm a foodie. Tried GM diet long back but that one week was very difficult. I still remember the 8th day after the diet got over, my face lit with 1000 lights becos I finally got to see some rice and idlis. So I need to find a diet in which I can eat 'Good FOOD'. I cannot eat only vegetables and survive.
The following are 'me' finally:
Cannot get up before 9am. Maximum 7.30am, that too only to be with my kid and morning chores.
I cannot go out and do any exercise. - Bcos I DONT have TIME. I'm busy.
I love strong coffee with less sugar - specific brand only - Narasus. I cannot live without 2 coffee per day [it might go upto 3 at times]
I love pastas, italian foods. Loved to eat out once in a while.
I love Non veg - esp Fish and Mutton.
Paneer is a very plain food. Who will eat in this world???
I can eat lot of vegetables but only with rice or rotis. Cannot eat alone.
I love our Indian Masala items - curry masala, garam masala etc.
I dont like to cook so much. Becos I DONT have TIME. I'm busy.
Green Tea - NOOOOO / Milk/Tea/Sugar without Sugar - NOOOOO.
Coconut is bad for health
I love fruits - all fruits. I just love them.
I'm born to EAT.
That photo was an eye-opener. It gave me so much pain that I had to break my pre-conceived ideas about my own self.
Then started reading the Paleo success stories. Kept looking at the pictures.
After seeing my own picture for more than 10 times, I decided to start the diet. Messaged Shankar Ji and asked him for suggestions. He shared the Beginners diet link. Took time to read all of them. Though didnt understand in the beginning, I thought thats it, I'm starting primarily becos of the Tamil paleo recipes pdf. I liked it so much.
I bought all the basic things - butter, cheese, almonds, vegetables etc. Soaked the 100 almonds
First day -

Butter tea - Add water, milk, butter, tea dust. Waited for 15 mins. That butter [Never tasted it alone so didnt know how it would melt etc] was a high quality one so it was taking more than 20 mins to dissolve but didnt happen. So i crushed it with spoon.
Started drinking it and it was too salty. Never knew butter would be so hard to eat/drink. Suddenly had a doubt, went and checked what i added into the tea - Alas - It was cheese. No wonder. Drank it since i didnt want to throw it.

Lunch - Carrot, Beetroot, onions salad. Hmmmmmm It was tasting really good. so packed it for lunch. Came to work. Had that lunch. During the break I messaged Shankar Ji that I had started the diet from this morning. He asked me what is it for lunch? I proudly announced my recipe. He said Beet root and carrot is for maintenance and not for weight loss! - Alas!!!
I had nothing else to eat and I had to digest the fact that my lunch was also a bulb.

Had some water, hot water, Green tea in the evening managed my hunger till dinner. time.
Then came the difficult part of eating 100 almonds. I cleaned the almonds once and started eating it. My whole family was staring at me , I could see my in-laws were controlling their smile [read it laughter] becos of my expression. Trust me that was the worst part of the diet.
I didnt fry it so it was plain and no taste.

I got up very early in the morning at 6.30 and did yoga for 45mins. I messaged Shankar Ji saying I did yoga for so long [thinking no women like me in the world could do 45mins of Yoga] and no other exercise is needed.
He said 45mins yoga and 2000 steps walking. What!!! 2000 steps walking. How on earth I will have time.
Then came 2nd day, started with 4 eggs and some good brinjal curry cooked in Butter and evening fried 100 almonds.
When it comes to exercise, I continued only with 3k steps. Initially I was counting. There was a park nearby which has 400 metres as one round. So started with 5 rounds - 30mins. Will take break in between. was counting the steps. Once I touch 3k I will stop and start driving my bike. No more walking. Shankar Ji said only 3k so wont walk beyond that.
Weight reduction in the first 2 weeks was so visible, I had tears when i wore one of the dresses which I couldnt wear it at all. From 80 to 75 was easy compared to the next set. I immediately messaged and thanked Shankar Ji for helping me out.
He said continue the diet and you will see lot of changes.
Its been 75+ days, I started enjoying the food more than anything. And I get up at 4.50, start walking around 5.20, came back home around 6 to start my food preparation - this includes breakfast and lunch for me, breakfast for family [lunch generally taken care my inlaws, at times by me] and dinner for husband before 8am and send the kid to school and come to office by 10. Go home by 7.30. Sleep by 9.30 pm or 10
I can get up before 6, even before 5 and stay fresh for the whole day.
I can go for walking for 30mins. 10+ rounds of 400metres park without break in between 2,3 rounds of jogging. Planning to participate in Walkathon whenever it happens in Chennai.
I can eat all vegetables cooked in coconut oil, ghee etc [found a shop where they sell Organic coconut oil]
I can live without coffee but enjoy life.
I can eat all fish
Hardly go out that too the question to them was what oil you use?? [You should see those guys expressions]. Take a paneer platter, share it with one more person and feel full.
I have tried cooking Paneer in 10 diff types of it. I'm loving every one of it.
Tried 10+ varieties of Egg, and its awesome.
Amla has become my partner
I plan for my interesting food for the next day well in advance
Even today I'm not a fan of Green tea, but i'm drinking min of 5 litres of water with no hesitation.
I'm born to EAT and I'm EATING with so much happiness.
As a person:
- My mind blocks have broken into pieces. Anything is possible here. The key is determination. This is helping me in my personal and professional life as well.
- I started respecting the people who come for walking, this is not that easy. Everyday, without any break some form of exercise is the way you respect your own body.
- Live the way your heart says not your stomach.
- Try new things in life, you have one life and live happily. You will never regret.
- Consistency. Follow anything you start religiously.
- There is no quick results for any of your efforts. It shouldnt be as well.
- Respect the body that has been blessed to you. Maintain it. Dont exploit it and regret it later.
- Time management have improved which again helps in lot of places.
- Respect - Lot of respect to Mr. Selvan, Shankar Ji and many other seniors who spends full and extra time in responding to all questions, clarifications raised by beginners like me across the world.
- Respect to the Family of Mr. Neandar.
- I respect my own self. I can do. When I can do - I'm sure YOU can do as well!!!!
You remember a guy who was cooking all the time and posting videos - That is Mr. Neandar Selvan :) Ji Sorry for my thoughts at that point of time.
Let me end it with this note. Caution!!!
This is a very costly diet. Becos your wardrobes have to be changed constantly. You will not be using what you were wearing 2 months back. That dress will look like a nighty/ blown up balloon now. So be ready to invest on new clothes which will be costly!!!!
